My Students

This project for my hard-working, incredibly resilient 7th-12th grade students at an urban public school in St. Paul, Minnesota. My young scholars are 21st Century thinkers stuck in a 20th Century classroom. We are a diverse school with 57% students who identify as Asian, 26% identify as Black, 12% identify as Hispanic, 4% who identify as White, and 1% who identify as American Indian. Almost 50% of our students are English language learners, and more than 95% of our students in our 6-12 grade school qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.

My students would love to have options for flexible seating in my classroom.

We don't all learn the same, why should we sit the same? Currently, they curl up or stretch out on the tired twenty plus year old carpet, some occasionally stand at the back of the room using a file cabinet or window ledges as a makeshift desks. Research shows learning increases in comfortable safe environments, that's what I'd like to create for my amazing kids.

My Project

Increasing student choice! This project provides two large standing desks allowing up to four students to stand while learning in our classroom. These desks could also be put together to create a standing group learning space. I hope that by creating choices for seating, my students will be able to be more engaged in learning.

Several academic studies have shown that providing alternative seating can increase student engagement at school.

I'm hoping providing this option for my student can help them feel more comfortable in our classroom and increase stamina in our 75 minute class periods. Everyone gets the wiggles and standing desks will allow for movement in new ways during class.
