As a dual-certified high school English (ELA) and Special Education teacher, I have students with a wide range of disabilities in my classes. My students work hard and are motivated to do well-they want to succeed. But all too often they are faced with challenges beyond their control; the impact of their disabilities may limit how engaged they are in class. As an intervention specialist, I must look for ways to ACCOMMODATE them through their environment, learning materials, and appropriate strategies. I have lots of students who are diagnosed with ADHD who subsequently have impulse control issues, sensory sensitivities, and a need to move about in the room. Behavioral studies show that the attention span of a teenager is about 20 minutes--on a good day.
My big athletes and my plus-sized kids should not feel bad because they don't fit into a regular desk.
My students are all shapes and sizes, so being confined to a one-piece chair/desk can be tough. It can cause body shaming issues, or make students embarrassed. I never want kids to have those barriers to learning. Having tall tables to stand and work helps add variety to my workspace. It makes my classroom more inclusive.
My Project
Once my project is fully funded, I plan to incorporate "standing spaces" in three areas of the classroom. Each of these tables will have a book stand as well. This will help to alter the profile of the workspace. Again, change helps to adjust focus and engagement.
I envision students at the tables volunteering to read and act when we read dramas in class.
I also plan to use the tables for work stations; places where students can travel from one location to the next to enhance learning through a variety of tasks. These activities may include hands-on team building, working with manipulatives, or group work. I can't wait to see how excited my students are about this addition to the classroom!
