Your timing could not have been more meaningful; receiving notice of this funding during National Teacher Appreciation Week served as a powerful reminder of the community of support that exists for educators. Because of your kindness, my high school students will return to a classroom that no longer feels like a set of four cinderblock walls, but rather a portal to another world.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher of British and Multicultural Literature, I am constantly asking my students to step outside of their own lives and into the shoes of characters spanning centuries and continents. However, it is difficult to ask a student to feel the weight of a medieval sword or the elegance of a Victorian parlor when they are surrounded by the sterile, uninspiring atmosphere of a standard school building. My goal has always been to create a \"magically academic\" setting—a space that feels like a cross between an ancient English college and a place of true wonder. Your donations are the final pieces of that puzzle.\r\n\r\nOne of the most vital components of this transformation is the portrait wall. In the traditional canon of British Literature, students of color often struggle to find themselves reflected in the imagery of knights, heroes, and noble ladies. I am dedicated to \"flipping the script\" by decorating our walls with portraits where people of color are depicted in these iconic roles. It is my firm belief that for a student to truly engage with the literature, they must first feel seen within it. By funding these final touches, you are helping me build a visual environment that says to every student, \"You belong in these stories. You are the hero of this narrative.\"\r\n\r\nMy classroom is not a \"sit and get\" environment. We are a community of active learners who believe that literature should be experienced, not just read. Throughout the year, we don't just talk about Beowulf; we immersive ourselves in the mead hall. We don't just analyze Shakespeare; we stage his scenes and feel the rhythm of his words. We host Victorian Tea Parties to understand the social nuances of the 19th century and dive deep into multicultural texts that challenge our worldviews. This immersive approach requires a setting that matches the energy of the curriculum. Your gift provides the backdrop for these experiences, giving my students the stage they need to perform, think critically, and grow.\r\n\r\nBeyond the aesthetics, your support has replenished our depleted supplies, ensuring that we have the functional tools necessary to keep this high-energy environment running smoothly. Having a fully equipped and \"finished\" classroom gives me an immense boost of confidence as an educator. It allows me to focus entirely on my students' growth and the magic of the lessons, rather than worrying about the gaps in our resources.\r\n\r\nYour investment goes so much further than posters, tapestries, or pens. You are investing in the spark of curiosity that happens when a student walks into a room and forgets they are in school for a moment. You are helping me create a space where critical thinking is born from inspiration. Thank you for being a part of this transformation and for supporting the next generation of readers, writers, and thinkers.\r\n\r\nWith deep gratitude and appreciation,","fullyFundedDate":1746495001989,"projectUrl":"project/reimagining-dark-academia-anyone-can-be/9319946/","projectTitle":"Reimagining Dark Academia-Anyone Can Be the Hero of the Story!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Carrie Deem","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5433821_orig.jpg?crop=1842,1843,x0,y122&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1697765021204","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-deem"},{"teacherId":5433821,"projectId":9237209,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for donating to this project. When I attended NCTE 2024 in Boston, MA, I did not expect to return inspired to teach Shakespeare in a whole new way. Offering \"book clubs\" for the Shakespeare unit in British Lit gave students agency over the story they wanted to experience. When students have the opportunity to choose their text, it also increases engagement. \r\nThe other cool thing about this set of plays is that they all have timeless themes and still hold relevance in today's society. Teaching students to see how literature mirrors real life can be a valuable tool in developing critical thinking skills. There is an ever-growing literacy crisis in our country. I literally watch students use technology to do all their thinking for them. It is my quest to bring engaging ways for students to bring reading back into their toolbox. Thank you for adding resources to my teacher toolbox.","fullyFundedDate":1744237014699,"projectUrl":"project/shakespeare-book-clubs-impact-on-social/9237209/","projectTitle":"Shakespeare Book Clubs; Impact on Social Issues & Change","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Carrie Deem","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5433821_orig.jpg?crop=1842,1843,x0,y122&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1697765021204","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-deem"},{"teacherId":5433821,"projectId":9139761,"letterContent":"I teach primarily British Literature, but I also teach Multicultural Lit & Comp; both are 12th grade English courses. With your donations to this project, I was able to design a classroom space that marries of the two courses; one that flips the script on traditional Medieval, Victorian and Renaissance imagery. Through careful selection of diverse prints (female knights and knights of different cultural representation), and the elements of dark academia decor, I was able to give my students a unique classroom aesthetic that welcomed them into the intrigue, mystery, and romanticism of British Literature.\r\n\r\nMy students have always told me that my classroom is one of warmth and welcome; a place where they feel seen and heard; a place they can come to learn and not feel academic anxiety they may struggle with in other classroom settings. I know I have created a space that offers my students (and their friends) a place of refuge from the stress of the day, and my students a space to feel inspired, included, and valued. They\r\nknow the space has been designed for them, and it makes them want to be here. Students sign up (by choice) to come hang out in my classroom during their mid-day 30 minute student support time. Sometimes they have work to complete, but often they come to curl up with a book. This room will have a lasting effect on students, and honestly, I don't see myself changing it ever again. We had a lot of positive interest in the beginning of the school year, and it didn't take long for our name to spread around campus. We wanted to find a way to carry our message quickly to as many people as possible. The \"Tiny Duck Project\" offered that delivery in a fun way. We cleverly paired messages about mental health each month with a duck theme, and out club hid the ducks all over campus the night before a duck-hunt day. Both students and staff alike enjoyed finding the ducks, and sharing them among their friends.\r\nAdditionally when we had a student engagement table for National Stress Awareness Day (that just happened to fall on the day after the 2024 election in November, We were able to offer the stickers you provided as well as conversation with peers and methods for relieving stress. Again, both faculty and students visited our table and expressed their gratitude.\r\nNone of this would have been possible without this DONORS CHOOSE OPPORTUNITY so early in the school year.","fullyFundedDate":1723475599655,"projectUrl":"project/at-nghs-you-matter-help-end-the-stigma/8620393/","projectTitle":"At NGHS You Matter: Help End the Stigma of Mental Health","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Carrie Deem","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5433821_orig.jpg?crop=1842,1843,x0,y122&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1697765021204","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-deem"},{"teacherId":5433821,"projectId":8950128,"letterContent":"Each year I offer my students a selection of books for Literary Circles--or mini book clubs. We have two units in the second semester of the year; Literary Non-fiction and Fiction. This year I was excited to try and add two new titles to the choices.\r\nFor Literary Non-fiction, I chose JUST MERCY; The young adult version, by Bryan Stevenson. After getting to hear this author and acclaimed attorney speak at the National Convention for Teachers of English in November, 2024, I knew his story would be one of great interest to my students. Thanks to donors like you, I was able to offer a JUST MERCY Lit. circle in 2 classes. This book was chosen by several students, and they found it incredibly interesting!\r\nFor the Fiction Unit, I provide students with a diverse set of stories across multiple genres, and stories that are written by POC. Additionally, the characters are POC, and not just going through traumatic stuff, they are living their best lives, and sometimes there are monsters and mythical creatures to deal with.
