Stand Up for Fourth Graders

Help me give my students a standing desk so they can have more flexible seating (or standing) options while they do their classwork or work in groups.

My Students

My students are a hardworking, fun-loving group of fourth graders. Both my homeroom and pod class excel at working on projects with iPads and Chromebooks. They have become experts on Google Slides and Keynote, using their devices to show their learning across the curriculum in reading, social studies and math.

These students are not only hardworking but very caring, as they routinely support and encourage each other.

While working together on their devices or helping classmates to play a game at morning meeting, my class cares about each other and our school environment. I would like to give these great kids an option to stand or move around yet still get their classwork accomplished.

My Project

I am looking for a standing desk as an option for some of my students who are struggling with their traditional desks. Allowing my students to stand while working would allow them to get their extra energy out while being appropriate. Currently at their regular desks, students are up and down all day which has been a distraction to classmates. The stand up desk has a bar where students can fidget with a moveable bar by their feet which will be beneficial to release that extra energy.

Studies show students are more focused when allowed to stand, so students with hyperactivity or attention issues can be more successful.

That “afternoon slump” while sitting could improve as well. In addition, my students like to work in partners with their Chromebooks or iPads and a standing desk would better facilitate working with a partner as there would be no issue of moving chairs or grabbing clipboards. This desk would give my students the option of standing at various times during the day, making them more productive and putting them more in charge of their learning.
