My Students

I teach in a high-poverty school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. My students are all recent immigrants to the United States who are learning English as a second language. They are not accustomed to our school culture which is much more sedentary with longer school days than their home countries.

I want to provide a classroom that enables them to stay engaged, move, and connect with one another.

Though there are many nations represented, their stories are similar. Each one came with family, not necessarily by choice, for the opportunity of a better life. Many left home countries that are torn by poverty, violence, or corruption. Their resilience and strength never cease to amaze me.

My Project

As recent immigrants, my students are not accustomed to our American school day, which is longer and much more rigorous academically and more sedentary than school days in their home countries. For most of them their school days were half as long and they were accustomed to constant movement, recess, and an hour break for lunch (which was used to play or move around).

Adding stand up desks to my classroom will help students maintain attention and increase engagement by adding movement for those students who need it.
