My school, though in a small town, is very diverse and this is seen in every classroom. For many of our students, school is a safe, constant place in their lives when life itself feels out-of-control and unsure. For my new-to-the-country students, my classroom is a safe haven where they are with peers that have similar life situations and where instruction is very carefully planned to ensure comprehension so that they feel safe and can be successful in learning both the English language and academic content.
