My students are all second and third graders in a neighborhood that struggles economically. About 100 percent of our students qualify for free lunches and breakfast. That, however, does not diminish their excitement for learning, especially if you incorporate things they like doing.
They are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences.
The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times, and we have to constantly look for ways to not only keep students engaged but also build their skills to prepare for potential future careers. We know that the future will require critical thinking and problem-solving skills, but it also requires a stronger background and understanding of science and technology, and my students love the hands-on learning.
We are the United States of America and it is important to show that we love our country. One way to do that is to say the Pledge of Allegiance on a regular basis. Also, in having the American Flag on display during key events/etc.
My students lead the school through the Morning Announcements as part of our daily broadcast and make many Public Service Announcements.
The classrooms have an American Flag but our Broadcast/Recording Studio does not. They want to lead by example and have the flag on display behind them during the morning announcements and during certain Public Service Announcement recordings they make and play.
