It is imperative that my class of first graders build a community where they feel comfortable communicating and sharing with their classmates. The students come from a variety of different backgrounds and contribute their unique experiences to the classroom community.
First graders naturally like to talk and share their varied experiences with anyone who will listen.
They will love whatever you teach them. If you show enthusiasm, they will show enthusiasm. They are eager to please. This energetic group of students have been busy building character and friendships this year. Gathering in a comfortable, welcoming space allows each student to feel like he/she is a special part of the classroom community.
My Project
The new book display stand will help to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My students love the books that I read aloud to them. The students love to reread the books for themselves and oftentimes these become new favorites. When students visit the library, they often check out the same books that I have read aloud to them. I do not have multiple copies of these books, so I do not place them in the classroom library because I keep my read alouds separate. I also do not have many places to display them once I have read more than three or four for the week so the books often end back up on my shelf until the following year and students do not have access to them. The display stand will be a place where I can place books I've read so that the students can than choose those books to read and place them back when they are finished.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and when students have books that appeal to them, they are more engaged in the reading process.
The more I get my students excited about reading, the more their joy for reading grows. This project will help to enrich the classroom environment by displaying high-interest books that students can choose to read and use as mentor text for writing as well.
