My students need standing desks. As all children have different learning styles and physical needs, my class would benefit if they are able to stand as they learn.

My Students

How would you rather learn? By sitting up in your chair or standing up. Kids go from running around outside and playing, to sitting at a desk for up to six hours a day when they enter school. These desks would help students burn calories, move around and work collaboratively on projects throughout the school day.

Our school has evolved through the years and become a place where students are heard and truly thrive.

My school is a place where kids get involved, learn to be leaders and lifelong learners. This school is a Title 1 school and many families struggle financially. The students come from all different backgrounds and many students have home lives that make it difficult to really focus on the job of being a student. These students work hard, as do the staff members. Each year, the school feels more and more like a family as teachers and students work together to meet the high academic standards.

My Project

With five standing desks, I can allow students who struggle to sit still the opportunity to go to a standing desk for a period of the day. Based on the students needs, they would get to share the desk or use it when they feel the need. With my current class there is one student who stands most of the day but at a regular desk. He would be more comfortable at a standing desk. There are also students who struggle physically. They don't all play outside and some would truly benefit from the extra calories they would be able to burn if they felt comfortable standing. I would begin by allowing all the students to try the desks and see who feels comfortable there and can be even more successful throughout the school day.

Standing desks lend themselves to the collaborating and technology used in today's classrooms.

This encourages an environment where different kinds of learners are valued and accommodated. Most teachers struggle to pay attention in professional development when sitting for long periods of time. Then we ask children to sit for much longer than we could as they listen to and apply new information throughout the day. These desks would transform the classroom to reflect the needs of today's youth.
