Do you remember when you read that first book...that book that changed and grew you as a reader forever? That book, that became your friend, your teacher, your problem-solver, your entrusted secret keeper. Do you remember the feeling when you finished that book? You felt like you were saying good-bye to your best friend. And when you finally decided to give another book a chance and had convinced yourself that you weren’t abandoning that book, your friend, you realized that book was the reason you had the confidence to accept new friends of all different kinds...that book was the catalyst in your love for reading.
“Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body.” - Richard Steele
Fifth grade, is the beginning of an exciting transition period for my students. As a teacher, I not only have the obligation, but the extreme privilege to influence my students’ social and academic growth as they begin to navigate their journey through childhood to adolescence. I have a group of both voracious readers and reluctant readers. I want to provide my students the best opportunity to optimize strength and confidence both socially and academically in both the hesitant and poised readers.
My Project
The days of the classroom being arranged in nice, neat rows where every student is sitting perfectly with their feet under their desk are over! When you give students choices, they will take responsibility for their own learning. Students want to make their own choices about what they are learning, how they are learning it, by whom they are learning it, the pace at which they are learning it, and where they are learning it. These days students crave a voice and choice about almost everything that involves their learning. This includes their classroom environment as well.
"An inviting, cozy reading nook serves as a launch pad to the journeys students will travel through books."
We need a bright, fun kidney table and stacking stools to use during guided reading groups and other group activities. Instruction taught in guided reading groups, specific to skill and/or level, launch students' success by providing them the opportunity to learn in a safe, unrestricted environment. A fun, colorful kidney table, with matching stools, serves as the launch pad for all types of readers.
