This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I began teaching 24 years ago and taught 5th grade. I left my classroom, and now I have the wonderful position of teaching social studies to about 400 students! It is daunting teaching from 1st through 5th grade (so ages 6 to about 12, depending upon their circumstances). I teach in East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem. I'm even teaching my former 5th grade students' children! I'm now a multi-generational teacher.
I try to have innovative materials to work with my diverse population.
My Project
Some of my students in different classes have attention deficit issues (I have 15 different classes). Another teacher has a standing desk that incorporates a foot swing. So while a student is working or listening to directions, they can push a lever with their foot or stand.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive to their peers when they are given an opportunity to move a bit.
It works very well. I would love to have one in my classroom as well. I'm also requesting an adjustable height chair to allow them to sit if they do choose.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
