My Project

In our STEM classroom, we will test how well Scotchgard inhibits staining. As middle school students staining clothes is common. Not only is this experiment relevant to middle school students, but it is also engaging and it exposes students to the real-life use of chemistry.

Students will explore the technology behind Scotchgard by testing different materials on Scotchgard-covered fabrics.

Yes, Scotchgard is a type of technology. In our STEM classroom, we will experiment with Scotchgard, not only to see the outcomes of different staining materials but to open our eyes to other possibilities of future technologies that can improve our lives.

Given that my goals for this project are for students to analyze data, draw conclusions, and think of ideas that will improve their future, students will use data collected to determine the effectiveness of Scotchgard against different staining materials.

This project would benefit all students but benefits mine more than most. Over 70% of my students receive free or reduced-rate lunch and therefore thinking about technology in this unique way will benefit my students. It is also known that chemists are less likely to come out of low socioeconomic groups. These two reasons along with the academic reasons are also reasons why this project is so important for my students to have an opportunity to experience. All students should be given opportunities to pursue a rich education that is focused on real-world issues.
