My Students

Texas leads the nation in overweight and obese children. In Texas, 42% of 4th graders were overweight or obese in 2004, with the highest percentage in Hispanic boys. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 60 minutes or more each day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.

I teach PE to students in grades K through 5.

Our school provides students from all economic situations with unique opportunities to engage in special programs and experiences. Our school district has grown to almost 50% Hispanic, and we live in one of the states with the highest percentage of childhood obesity. Many of our students are overweight and intimidated by physical activity and exercise. Our students work hard academically in the classroom and at home. We want to work equally as hard in the 45 minutes that they have in the gym. Our students attend PE 3x/week for 45 minutes.

My Project

Traditional speed stacks are 4" cups that students stack in various patterns. The "On the Move with Speed Stacks" activity guide combines cardiovascular exercise with sport stacking in innovative and fun ways. Activities include a warm up, fitness stacking, skill-related fitness activities, partner stacking and more. The Stack Spots are 10 fitness spots with printed instructions for activity stations. Multiple fitness stations will be set-up around the gym. Students can spend 1-2 minutes at each station. Jumbo cups are the perfect way to turn up the fun and add more movement at the same time. Floor relays and double stacking are a whole new challenge with these large scale cups.

Your donation will make it possible for our students to use unique equipment that is challenging both physically and cognitively for each grade level.

The cups make exercising interesting and, best of all, students will learn to associate being physically active with having fun.
