Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has approximately six hundred fifty students and twenty-five classrooms ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. Ninety-two percent (92%) of our students receive free breakfast and lunch assistance with single-parent families. Our school is in a high poverty area. We are a Title I elementary school with a diverse population of learners and the average salary in their homes are considerably below the national average.

All of my students are creative, thoughtful, and eager learners, and much of their knowledge this year has been expressed through their literacy and collaboration.

I am a library teacher who loves to read and I encourage my students to read daily. It has been so exciting to see them fully engaged each day as they learn through collaboration and play with their peers. However most of their learning is done on the rug due to the unsafe tables.

My Project

These six new stable tables will allow my students to have access to a stable learning area within the library. My current tables are falling apart due to the old screws/nuts/bolts. On a daily basis, I am finding either a screw, a nut or a bolt on the floor. My tables are so wobbly that I have wooden blocks under the legs to keep them straight and upright. Moreover, often times a student will accidentally kick the block from under the leg and whatever is on the tables falls to the floor, including electronic devices. This is now becoming a safety issue for my students. They need the basic school essentials for learning and having stable tables is an essential component in any classroom.

The benefits of this project will impact all 650 students in our school.
