Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in Florida where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend.

Many of my students come from all over the world, where English is not their first language.

They have come here for a better life and are working hard to learn the language plus essential skills to become successful in the future. I want to give them a great start to their long successful career.

My Project

This year's Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) books for grades 3-5 will keep the students' interest in reading growing. The SSYRA list has just been released so I am hoping to get a head start for the next school year. This way, when school starts and we preview these books and make our predictions, students can start reading these books right away. Our school also has a contest to read as many of the SSYRA books. Many of the students do not have access to the public library so having this selection will make the books accessible to them and keep them interested in reading. Using these books (Roll With It, The Great Pet Heist, and The Disaster Days) will help everyone because the reading levels are varied. They are also different genres—so there will be something for everyone.
