Mrs. Steinbrecher from Milwaukee WI is requesting Reading Nooks, Desks & Storage through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Squishy, Gooey, Slimy, Sandy, Sensory Fun!

My students need materials like food coloring, glue, and liquid starch to engage in themed sensory experiences. They also need a new area to complete a sensory station, and this sand and water table is perfect!

My Students

As an occupational therapist, the children that I work with are typically medically fragile and have delays. They require break down of subjects and materials that are developmentally appropriate. Often in order to maintain attention to academics, engaging materials are a must. Breaks and adaptations allows them to refocus and stimulate their brain in another way, while allowing them to learn and achieve independence, strength, and good coordination and fine motor skills in order to be successful learners.

Special needs children required adaptive toys, and materials for learning and for play.

You will be providing opportunities for the children to play like all children do. So often activities and breaks for these projects are supported by related service providers like myself.

My Project

Providing my students with the materials to create, and use sensory equipment for tactile exploration will improve their attention. This is a great learning experience also. Just a couple of things they do are; learning to use measuring cups, turn taking, they work on their hand strength, colors, communication, and sensory intake. Having materials on hand like glue, liquid starch, and shaving cream makes it so easy to expose these children to these opportunities.

Sensory activities promote exploration, and naturally encourage children to discover feedback about textures; as well as enhancing play, and exploration.

Having a sensory table where they can learn in the classroom not only gives organization but keeps this messy activity less messy, and organized; as well as keeping things neat by using the kinetic sand and sand toys! Children learn the best and retain the most information when they have all of their senses engaged. Help these children explore and complete more complex learning tasks that supports cognitive growth, language development, gross and fine motor skills, social interaction and problem solving skills.
