My Project

I have 20 vibrant PreK kids, and we love art! As a result of the pandemic, many parents have kept their young children home to avoid exposure to the Covid-19 virus. With limited experiences, we are seeing greater deficits in many foundational skills. Lack of exposure has resulted in lower development in large muscles, fine motor, language, vocabulary, coping, sensory processing, and self-management. Art is a great way to close the gaps we are seeing!

Having access to a variety of Art materials is invaluable.

Sticker stories, for example, use foam shapes to engage creativity and language/vocabulary development as children use foam shapes to illustrate a story and dictate the words. They offer a fine motor component as the children use their pincher grasp to peel the paper off of the back. Stickers can also be used to develop spatial and geometric thinking as children can attempt to "fill" a space with stickers. This is also a great activity to do using tissue paper squares or colored tape. Paint is another key material. Paint of all types used with different sized brushes engages different muscles in the hands, arm and shoulders increasing development and coordination in both large and fine motor. Paint can also be squished, dropped from droppers, or rolled. The possibilities are endless. Sensory input helps the brain build connections that support higher level skills such as language and vocabulary. Smelly markers, foam paint, sensory foam and foam stickers all offer different sensory experiences. In addition, working in collaboration alongside their peers while creating helps students to build relationships and spur conversations, further strengthening language and communication skills. Finally, art provides an experience that can be therapeutic and calming for students.
