Squish and Speak! Building Language & Literacy Through Sensory Learning

Help me give my students with various disabilities hands-on tools—modeling dough, fine-motor mats, and multicultural dolls—to build language, early literacy, and communication skills through play-based learning.

My Project

This project provides sensory-based learning tools for students with disabilities, including students on the autism spectrum, who benefit from hands-on learning experiences. Many of my students learn best when they can touch, build, move, and interact with materials while practicing communication, early literacy, and fine-motor skills.

The modeling dough and fine-motor mats will help students build the hand strength, vocabulary, and communication skills they need to write letters, follow directions, express ideas, and participate more fully in classroom learning.

For some of my students, simple hands-on supports like modeling dough and sensory mats can make the difference between watching from the sidelines and actively participating alongside their classmates.

As students roll, press, pinch, and shape the dough, they practice following directions, learning vocabulary, expressing ideas, and strengthening the fine-motor skills needed for writing and other literacy activities. For students who are nonverbal or partially verbal, these sensory-based activities also provide concrete ways to communicate, make choices, respond to prompts, and participate more fully in classroom learning.

For many of my students, sensory activities are not just a preference—they are an important part of how they access learning, stay regulated, and participate successfully in instruction. While these kinds of hands-on supports are essential for many students with disabilities, they are often not included in curriculum materials or classroom budgets. These tools will give my students more opportunities to build confidence, independence, communication, and early literacy skills through active, meaningful learning experiences.
