This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My third graders are a resilient, energetic, and incredibly diverse group of learners. They come to my classroom every day with a hunger for knowledge, but like many students in a fast-paced urban environment, they also carry the weight of big emotions. What I love most about them is their empathy for one another; when a classmate is struggling, they are the first to offer a kind word. However, at nine years old, they are still learning how to navigate frustration, anxiety, and the pressure of more rigorous academic expectations. They deserve a space where they feel safe, grounded, and emotionally supported.

In our classroom, we focus heavily on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL).

We know that a brain in "survival mode" or high stress cannot effectively process new information. Currently, many of my students struggle with "fidgety" energy or anxiety during high-stakes moments like independent reading or math assessments.

I am requesting a variety of stress balls and squishies to create a dedicated "Calm Down Kit" and to provide individual sensory tools for students who need them. Squeezing a stress ball provides a physical outlet for nervous energy, allowing the body to release tension and the mind to refocus on the task at hand. Having a "squishy" at their desk gives students a discreet way to manage anxiety without disrupting their peers. It teaches them to recognize their own stress triggers and use a tool to self-soothe.
