I am a media specialist at a local, inner-city school in the metro Atlanta area. 100% of our students receive free lunch. Many of my students are underperforming and reading below grade level. I spend a good portion of my day building morale and encouraging students to read daily.
My school is comprised of students who are energetic and eager to learn.
However, some are reluctant and are often intimidated in classrooms comprised of both fast-paced and slower-paced learners. More than half of our student population is reading far below grade level.
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” My students benefit most from lessons that are teacher-led and student-centered. My students love activities that are hands-on and involve technology. In the media center, I place a strong emphasis on merging literacy and developing 21st-century skills.
Our school building is a safe space for our children. Many of our students come from low income communities. Unfortunately, many of them raise themseleves. Some of them have absent parents or parents who simply can not physically be present because they need to work countless hours to provide for their families.
Our school is committed to providing our students and families with whatever they need for their child to learn and be successful.
Good hygiene helps our children feel clean, confident and ready to learn. Our school has a full pantry and care closet. We make sure our students are nourished and have clean uniforms.
Our school also has a washer and dryer. We frequently wash soiled uniforms in school so that we can lessen this burden to families that do not have the resources to keep their children in clean uniforms. These materials requested will allow us to continue to provide the essentials for our students so they can focus on showing up to learn.
