My students can bring a smile to anyone's face. They range in age from 3-5 years old. About half of my students have identified special needs and the other half are typically developing. My students needs vary from speech and language delays to Autism Spectrum Disorders to rare medical disorders.
A majority of my students spend two years in my preschool classroom allowing me the gift of seeing them learn and grow for a longer period of time than most educators.
My young students spend a great deal of time exploring hands on materials in our classroom and I spend a great deal of time carefully preparing each learning center to engage my students and encourage their natural curiosity and creativity.
My Project
My students learn best through hands on exploration and play. One center we lack developmentally appropriate materials in is our discovery center. Our discovery center encourages children to explore basic principals of Science, Technology, Engineering, as well as Math.
With these STEM materials I will be able to support my students wonder about the world around them and give them opportunities to explore, ask questions, and further develop critical thinking skills.
For example my students will explore engineering as they use their imagination to create rocket ships, castles, and sky scrapers with magnet building tiles. They will learn basic principals of physics such as balance and motion as they explore the balancing tree game and wooden balance beam weighing scale.
Research shows that supporting STEM in early childhood enhances students interest in STEM study and careers later on. It is my hope that all of my students will move on from my Preschool classroom with a lifelong love for learning.
