Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Is there anything more aesthetically pleasing than the sweet sound of the ukulele? It's portable, it's inexpensive, and perfect for children ages 5-100. There is something magical about playing a stringed instrument, and the ukulele is the perfect gateway.
Our Title I school is one of the most diverse schools in its district.
There are 3-4 home languages spoken across the student body, with students coming from all types of socioeconomic backgrounds. However, most of our students come from low-income families and are often living in multiple-family homes. Many do not have the opportunity to explore their talents outside of school. Our school has a thriving music program that includes chorus, band, orchestra, and a general music program that allows students to experience music first-hand. Even if students aren't able to afford an instrument of their own or participate in an official school ensemble, they have the opportunity to play instruments such as the ukulele, Orff instruments, and a variety of percussion in the general music classroom.
My Project
I live by the motto: "Don't waste precious class time doing things for students that they can do for themselves." In a typical ukulele lesson, I will spend 3-5 minutes tuning students' ukuleles. If there were a handful of clip-on tuners to go around, students could tune their own instruments within a small group as I migrate between students who need extra help.
Ukulele picks, unlike guitar picks, are typically made of felt and will allow students to maintain the characteristically sweet tone of the ukulele while protecting their fingers from blisters.
The Essential Elements series is one that is commonly used in our district for band and orchestra. I believe the structure and delivery of the lessons in this series would fit perfectly in our ukulele classroom as well.
When students learn a musical skill, they gain confidence in themselves and in their ensemble.
Children are musical by nature, and the ukulele is the perfect instrument for them to practice skills in music literacy, improvisation, accompaniment, and more. If fulfilled, the requested items in this project will help to foster a child's love of music.
