Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students in my classes participate in a program called Eco-School where they identify areas where our school lacks in sustainable practice. This year, my students have identified our school as part of what is known as a food desert - in other words, access to fresh and affordable produce is limited for people in these areas. To combat this sustainability issue, my students are creating different gardening initiatives at the school. One such is our classroom garden. The hydroponics garden in my classroom helps my environmental science and chemistry students explore real-world applications of their learning. We will use these seeds and materials to germinate fruit-bearing plants that we can care for and utilize in our classroom.
These materials are a means by which to create a safer and healthier learning environment for my kids in our urban classroom.
We are requesting urban gardening supplies that will be used in a greenhouse gardening initiative to allow students to grow fresh produce year-round. We are asking for soil, a hand truck, and watering cans that will help us grow our seeds when springtime comes. Many students participating in this program come from other countries where language gaps and education gaps make their learning difficult. Rather than subject them to pen-paper or digital learning, we elect to do projects. Our city (Trenton, NJ) is a sanctuary city. More than 50% of our population are newcomers to our country. These materials will help them to feel active and integrated into our community!
