Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I want other kids to understand me". The students who I work with have a speech and language delay or disorder. This means that they cannot communicate their wants and needs effectively- or at all without the support of speech and language pathologists or teachers. The Springfield Public Schools is a large urban district with a large population of students who learn English as their second language.
My students are resilient, hard-working, and determined, despite their challenges with communication.
They have to work twice as hard to communicate messages that others take for granted such as "I feel sick", or "STOP!".
Some of my students communicate using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) which could include low tech picture communication systems or high tech communication devices. When given the appropriate tools and instruction they will thrive!
My Project
This project will allow over 100 Springfield public school students who have communication goals and objectives in their Individualized Education Plans to have access to fun and engaging materials. Services are provided in small and large group settings and must be engaging for a variety of ages and abilities.
These materials will allow students to become more effective communicators by helping them to learn the foundational skills that they need in elementary school.
Foundational communication skills include vocabulary, syntax, morphology, and use of language. Many students do not have access to rich vocabulary at home and require the explicit instruction of sentence structure and social skills at school.
Speech and language sessions are brief, only 30 minute at a time, so we need to have the best materials possible to make the most of our time together!
