This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are motivated by their dreams. The 12 and 13 year olds in my classroom yearn for success and opportunities. These students ask critical questions about the world around them and why things are not equitable in our society. They see and are impacted by the violence in our communities. Summer vacations don't provide much solace because their parents fear for their child's safety. Regardless of the social and economic burdens that follow my students, they work hard because they see glimmers of a better tomorrow.
My Project
Reading is a necessary skill to have. Fostering a love of reading can only occur when students have readily available texts that interest them. Over the years, my students have come to like many known authors like James Patterson, Angie Thomas or Dhonielle Clayton. Today more than ever, my students can see themselves as protagonists in many books because the books are more racially and culturally diverse.
My students have gained interest in many newer authors such as Angie Thomas and after reading The Hate U Give, they are looking forward to reading her new book On The Come Up.
In these books the protagonist is African American and my students feel that connection and can see themselves as they read books written by African American authors.
