My students are predominantly African American, receive reduced price lunch, Chicago urban kids. My 7th and 8th graders are young people with big dreams, resilience, grit, skills and determination. There are not many opportunities afforded to my students. They do not wait for opportunities, rather, they go out and make opportunities for themselves. My kids dream of being doctors, engineers, and world leaders. They are growing up in a world class city but experience third world conditions. Even at their age they are aware of social stigmas and how society often portrays them. Society does not expect them to succeed but they and relentless in their fight for their future.
