Help me give my students a fun and educational gardening experience where they will get to plant their seeds and observe their plant's life cycle in real time!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's springtime and our kindergarteners at our school are starting to learn about the different life cycles that occur in the spring and recognize these changes within their own communities. With more than 60% of our grade level being EL learners, it is important that we as kindergarten teachers provide opportunities for hands-on activities where students can see some of the life cycles learned about in class in real time.
With these materials, our goal is to divide each item between our Kindergarten and TK teams (4 classes in total) and create a gardening experience with students where they plant their seeds and track their observations as their seed begins to sprout and grow into a plant.
Students will be using materials like mini gardening shovels (for little kinder hands) to re-beautify our kinder playground that includes a garden area and plant the seeds in the large planter as a spring grade-level activity.
Since students will not be able to take home the large flowers from the garden once in bloom, we intend to use the mini terracotta pots as a classroom project (4 classrooms) where students will be given paint and brushes to paint their planter before planting their own seed to take home at the end of the school year, along with the book How A Seed Grows to grow on their own. We hope students can take away a love for gardening and curiosity for how things grow around them. While these projects are academically aligned to our ELA curriculum, we also hope students takeaway emotional and interpersonal skills like patience, learning to care for something, and perseverance.
When these materials are not in use (shovels, plants, and broom) will be shared with the school's gardening club!
