Spreading the Good Word ... Vocabulary Matters!

My students need vocabulary journals to record all of their fabulous new words, and a collection of vocabulary books to help me teach my students about word parts.

My Students

"Half the world is composed of people who have something to say and can't, and the other half who have nothing to say and keep on saying it." - Robert Frost My amazing students have plenty to say, but they need some help acquiring the vocabulary to best express themselves.

I teach third grade at a high-needs Title I school, and I need resources to be able to help my students expand their academic vocabularies.

While I am not an ESL teacher, I still have many English language learners in my classroom. I am trying my best to help my students learn English as quickly as possible, but this is a big challenge within my diverse classroom. I also have many native-English speaking students who still have vocabulary deficits, especially when it comes to the formal English used for writing and understanding academic texts.

My Project

Next year, I plan on creating an intensive vocabulary development curriculum for my students. I've realized that my students need explicit, systematic instruction in vocabulary, and more specifically, in word parts, roots, and shades of meaning. It isn't enough to simply have students memorize lists of words out of context; they simply can't learn enough words this way. Instead, I want to help my students improve their mastery of the English language and understand literally thousands of words by studying Greek and Latin word parts (prefixes, root words, and suffixes). Ancient Latin and Greek live on in the words we speak every day, and I need to teach my students how to "break the code" so that they can "figure out" words for themselves. I also want to help my students fall in love with words, and the study of vocabulary. I want them to taste a wide range of linguistic treats, and I hope that they become vocabulary gourmands!

Please help my students discover the power of vocabulary and nurture their love of words!!!

With these resource books and student vocabulary journals, I will be able to build a year-long word study program for my students to help them become powerful "word warriors"!
