Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Nestled in the heart of the South Bronx is an elementary school with students who have great potentials in becoming successful citizens in today’s society.
We have students with and without disabilities who will come together to learn how to cook and make smoothies.
We are seeking your help to acquire blenders, air fryers, and toaster ovens that will enhance our students' understanding of nutrition, creativity, and teamwork. This project is aimed at promoting healthy eating habits and spreading random acts of kindness throughout the school.
Our school community will see how food is grown with our recently purchased hydroponics tower garden and then transferred onto their plate where they get to eat and drink their creations. They can make different types of smoothies with the blenders after they plant and harvest leafy greens. Our students will also make dishes from different cultures for our school community. Their willingness to try new foods, their excitement about hands-on learning, and their ability to work together as a team will teach them valuable lessons. The toaster ovens will be used to bake cookies, too. Through baking, our students not only learn valuable culinary skills but also practice math (measuring ingredients), science (understanding how ingredients interact), literacy (reading recipes), and teamwork. It’s a hands-on way for them to build confidence, improve fine motor skills, and develop communication skills.
