Help me give my students books on diversity, kindness and inclusion that they can use to help spread positivity and acceptance throughout our school. These books will be used to read to other classes and promote awareness.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are in varying grades in the elementary setting. They have many challenges on a daily basis because they all have disabilities that prevent them from developing at the same rate as their typical peers. This does not stop them, though! Despite any obstacles, my students continue to push and strive for success. They amaze me daily on their perseverance and strength!
Being a part of the classroom environment and feeling included in everyday activities is an intricate part of our school day.
My students notice that they are different from others - whether it is how they look, act or feel.
Another barrier that my students face is that many of them are from lower socio-economical backgrounds, as my school is a Title I school. At home, they do not always receive the same amount of support as other students, as their resources are limited. This also means that their exposure to new experiences or diverse people is limited as well.
Despite the struggles that my students face at home, at school and within themselves daily, they come to school happy and willing to learn. I always get their best effort!
My Project
These books will be used to read to classrooms through the school and help to expose others to different exceptionalities. Their goal is to spread positive messages about inclusion, acceptance, kindness and diversity.
My students would like to take time each week to read a book and have open discussions about different disabilities with their peers.
Each student will pick a book and a classroom to work with throughout the week. They will independently develop activities to support the book of their choice. My students hope that by reading these stories and having these conversations, they can help others to effectively build inclusive activities and classrooms.
