Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a school counselor in a middle and high school that serves the students of Springfield, Massachusetts.
Springfield Public Schools is a large school district with approximately 25,000 students.
Hispanic students make up 66.6%, African Americans make up 18.9%, Caucasians make up 10.2%, with Native American, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and others making up the remainder of our student body.
Of our student body, 23.5% are students with disabilities, 76.7% are economically disadvantaged, 83.2% are high needs, 17.3% are English language learners, and 29.1% speak another language first other than English.
My Project
These items will provide activities for our students to participate in during movement breaks throughout the day or as incentives.
All of our students are on IEPs and can struggle with emotional/behavioral regulation at times throughout their school day.
Giving the students opportunities to take short breaks from class can often help decrease the amount of issues they may have during the day.
Many of our students prefer to participate in a movement break-whether it be in our office and they can bounce on an exercise ball, or some prefer to be even more active and like to go to the gym or outside to throw a basketball, football, or kick a soccer ball.
Other students like to work towards a movement break as a daily incentive. For example if they have a great day-we can take them to the gym at the end of the day to play basketball for 20 minutes before they go home.
These items will allow us to have access to these items at will, without having to go to the gym/gym teacher to gain access, which will be beneficial as our students often need a break in an unplanned moment.
