Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an eighth grade English and Speech teacher at a school where 86% of our students are Low Income, 33% are English Language Learners, and 69% are at-risk. Our students are positive and trying to connect to the world and make an impact through technology and language.

Our Spoken Word club is dedicated to empowering teens as they discover the power of poetic expression and find their 'voice'. They will express their thoughts and ideas by creatively writing, performing, infusing technology, and publishing original pieces.

Spoken Word's innovative, multidisciplinary approach allows student to interpret, analyze, and personalize literature, music, and art while addressing state standards. Their Spoken Word pieces explore complex social issues such as family dynamics, immigration, pop culture, bridging generational gaps, diversity and peer pressure. By having a flash drive on which to save their multimedia work, students will have a portable "journal" of poetry set to music and attached to art. The security of their innermost thoughts can be transferred from workshops and school to home and the public library. Pieces will be submitted at the end of the year to form a multi-media anthology. Audacity, PhotoStory, PowerPoint, Moviemaker, and Word will be utilized in the creation of these pieces. Works will be stored, edited, and shared using these individual flash drives.

In a school where language could be a barrier, our students are using it to find themselves and connect to a new, technological world. Your help would give them a 21st century journal to explore, express, and share their unique opportunities and thoughts in one place. Please help our students find and record their original voices!
