Welcome to our lively classroom! We start our mornings with moving our bodies and exercising our minds with literacy. Students rush in searching for the books and activities that will start their day.
I have the best students in Kindergarten!
Our school is one of the top performing schools in our district. We come from very diverse cultures, with languages from Somalian to Italian spoken in their homes. Students are between 4-8 years of age in my classroom. We have 100% of our families living below the federal poverty limit. All of the students participate in the free breakfast and lunch program.
Our school is in a high crime area. We also are an inclusive classroom with many differences in learning. There are many students with disabilities like emotionally disturbed, students who are deaf, and physical handicaps. But this NEVER limits us!
My Project
Our students participate in literacy touches every day. Each student is required to attempt/complete five different literacy activities. These activities include working with sight words, making words, reading stories to a partner, reading to themselves, writing, and listening to stories.
With the headphones and the individual CD players, students can listen to books on CD on their own. This is going to allow students to become fluent readers and speakers. Students will use their own decision making to choose the book to listen to. This is empowering!
Based on a classroom survey taken at the beginning of the year, 95% of my students are not read to at home.
Donations will empower my students with their learning! They will have a choice in their learning. They love hearing spoken stories that are an embedded part of the diverse cultures. I want to share some of the audio books that I have with the students. These headphones and CD players will give the students a chance to hear the stories on their own.
