Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend school in a low income/high poverty school district. Many of the students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, they come to school excited to learn. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. I teach in a 3rd-grade Inclusion Room and there are 25 students in my homeroom. Half of my students have Individualized Education Plans and they require classroom and testing accommodations.

My students are unique in their own way and possess many different talents.

Their abilities vary from being as low as kindergarten to as advanced as fifth graders. Some of my students are learning English as a second language. In my class, I also have three students on the Autism Spectrum. They try very hard to be successful, but need extra support from me to help with their success. With the different abilities and learning styles in my classroom, differentiated learning activities are a necessity.

My Project

My project includes a daily practice journal for each student. These consumables will make reviewing key standards more effective. They provide powerful yet short practice that students can complete first thing in the morning, during centers or small groups, and they can be completed as homework. The journals will be used as a supplement to our Reading, Writing, and Math curriculum.

Spiral Review is a critical component of any classroom.

These books allow for just that. It keeps kids' work organized so that they can refer to it at a later time. The journals will allow for us to stop and review skills that build on each other and truly allow for learning.

In summary, these daily practice journals will provide multiple opportunities for my students to be successful, and for me to quickly assess my students, reteach when necessary, and see where they still need help. Thank you for taking the time to read about our project!
