My Students

My students are grades K-5 in Kentucky. We are the only elementary school in our small town. My students come from a variety of different backgrounds. Last year, our whole school received free/reduced-price lunch. I teach all classes in grades K, 1, 2, 4, and 5. Our school is a very close-knit community school. Because of our rural location, sometimes students do not have access to as many STEM materials and experiences as students in larger areas.

This is my first year in my new role--the Makerspace teacher.

I teach STEM content, and we focus on science standards. Students have built things like wooden boats and propeller cars. We've also learned to code (even the kindergarteners!). One of my next steps for our class is to have access to more technology for our STEM learning. We want to learn how to program robots!

My Project

My class focuses on teaching students STEM skills. One of our units this year taught the student how to code. We want to take our coding to the next level--and code robots!

These Sphero robots will allow students to use their coding skills to program and control the movement and actions of the robots.

Sphero robots use simple programs, and all grades K-5 will be able to use them! The students will work in groups to help code their Spheros to move through mazes They can even program the robots to show different colors and make noises on command.
