Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"How do you spell...?" "Look it up." How many times has someone told you that? Well...seriously...how are you supposed to look it up if you don't know how to spell it? Seriously! My students are able to get close, but usually not close enough! Electronic Spellers are an answer to our prayers!
90% of the students in our school are poverty level.
Majority are second language learners who are often migrant - not the kind that moves for purposes of employment; but, because families living in poverty face many, many challenges that require them to move often. These families work hard just to survive. Academics are often low in their list of priorities, so getting students motivated and excited about their education is not always easy.
I often catch them daydreaming... follow up...just to find out that something really, really horrible is on their minds. Is it any wonder that they struggle in learning? Learning a new language, living in poverty, and finding resources for assistance in learning is a challenge for most of the students in our school. Helping them understand that resources are available, how to tap into those resources, and sending them home with resources is my ultimate goal as their teacher. They need to learn how to learn and take that lesson with them!
My Project
Electronic spellers are resources that are easily accessible and affordable in a lot of department stores. They are a tool that students' families might be inspired to purchase for themselves once their children have learned how to use them. Although computers can do a similar job, most of my kids don't have computers. One student said that he won't get one because, "What good would it do? It would just be jacked as soon as they found out we have one."
Electronic spellers are a little more subtle in their tough neighborhood - a resource that they may be able to keep and use throughout their education. Along with the electronic speller, we will use the spelling dictionary to record the words that students locate on the speller. The spelling dictionaries will be a valuable resource that will help them understand the format of a dictionary, which may help them better understand how to find words in a dictionary. Getting closer and closer to independence in their learning!
Electronic spellers accompanied with spelling dictionaries, will encourage these struggling students to explore WORDS in an independent process that promotes a desire for life long learning!
A simple tool used at school to teach them how to become independent at home is the greatest gift we can give a child! "Look it up" just became feasible to them and they can finally say, "I get it!" It's also an affordable tool that their families will, hopefully, be able to afford for future use.
