This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever not had the ability to communicate with the world around you? Have you gone a day without using words? Many of my students are non-verbal or have very limited functional communication skills. While they might not communicate verbally with me, though their gestures communicate with me to tell me how much they enjoy coming to speech. When I see them they greet me with a smile, hug, or a wave. These students come from poverty and limited access to materials and services outside of the school setting, which makes my time with them even more special. I take our 30 minutes very seriously in order to help them reach their most potential.

My Project

These items that have been chosen will help all of my students regardless of their ability level succeed in speech therapy and help them find their voice to communicate. A simple sensory toy, such as the sand, can be used with a student who has autism, the child can use their assistive technology device to communicate "I like it" or "I want more" or with a student who is working on labeling items buried within the sand. With each item chosen, lots of thought and consideration has been given in order to make sure the item can used with all students who attend speech therapy.
