As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I get the opportunity to work with students from elementary age to high school that have learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, speech and language delays, motor delays, and other disabilities that affect their ability to communicate verbally and non-verbally.
My students work hard to develop the fundamental skills to communicate successfully with others.
Planning differentiated instruction for multiple students at one time requires creativity and activities to keep the session running smoothly. The students come to speech excited to learn and increase their skills. I love that I get to work with a variety of students and target each of their individual needs.
My Project
The material I am requesting will help my students have a fun and engaging speech time experience. With the added stresses and pressures of COVID, my students have had a more difficult time communicating which affects their mental status and confidence around their peers. I would like to add some stability back into their lives by working on their communication goals with materials they enjoy. Using books in speech therapy provides many ways to target individual goals during small group instruction. For kids that need extra support in language, I am able to adapt books and use interactive pieces and props to enhance their learning. This will give my students the vocabulary, the context, and the confidence to participate more fully in their classrooms.
An iPad is ideal for targeting multiple goals in a session with multiple students.
Having an iPad will help my students to access different modalities of learning and skill-building. An iPad will enhance learning for my visual learners who thrive with hands-on activities. It also gives me the capability to work with students who need home access during quarantine or other related illnesses.
