My students need a laptop computer to compete against schools that already have dozens.

Hooray! This project is fully funded
This year, the Golden Gate Speech Association began allowing students to use laptop computers in preparing their speeches. As a public, urban high school, neither I nor the students have the resources to compete on an even playing field. This laptop will allow my students to more fairly compete.
All of my students are either immigrants or the children of immigrants.
Many are working class, and most have English as a second or third language. In comparison to nth-generation Americans whose parents have advanced degrees, and who grew up speaking English, my students are already at a disadvantage. Combine that with minimal time for practices (compared to daily classes my school can't afford), and it becomes clear that the deck is stacked against my students.
A laptop computer will allow my students to stand a fighting chance. They're already computer savvy due to personal interest and drive, but they lack the financial resources to make full use of their skills. Your support will allow them to do so. They'll be able to organize their ideas on a computer rather than a physical box, making possible faster, more efficient research and work.
I graduated from this school, and competed on this speech team.
I remember vividly the experience of competing alone against better funded, better prepared squadrons. We can't do anything immediately to address that inequality, but a laptop is a first step in that direction.
