Speech, Language and Literacy

Help me give my students the opportunity to use the most up-to-date research with neurodiversity and culturally intelligent designs to develop their ability to use speech sounds and associate those sounds with the ability to read.

My Project

Speech sound development and learning to read go hand in hand. If a child has difficulty developing their ability to use proper speech sounds, decades of research suggests that they will also likely have difficulty learning to read and write. There are expected errors that most, if not all, children make while they learn to speak. These are phonological processes, but when these phonological processes persist beyond around age 5 or 6, they become patterns that are hard to break and associating letter sounds with the correct word becomes difficult.

California Education Code is clear that in order to be found eligible as a student with a speech or language impairment for a speech sound disorder, a child must display difficulty with a speech sound and educational impact.

The only students who I see for speech sound development are the children who are having difficulty with accessing core curriculum or participating in their school day because of their speech sound disorder. These cards will help to develop letter-sound association and develop children's ability to read and write.
