Speech Generating Device for Students with Exceptional Needs

My students need three alternative and augmentative speech generating devices (iPad minis) to effectively communicate and make their needs known and met.

My Students

Is there a person in your life that you know who is bursting with thoughts and ideas and can't say a single word? My students with exceptional needs face this challenge everyday. They are in need of a more effective system of communication.

I have 12 lively and enthusiastic students with exceptional needs in my K-3 special day class in a high poverty area in California.

They are in a severely handicapped class integrated in a public school facility. Many of my students have significant delays in the area of functional communication which is crucial for most typically developing peers. My students are diagnosed with Speech and Language delays, Mild Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder Syndrome and has deficits in social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication. They use Picture Exchange Communication System to help them facilitate their immediate needs and enable them to request and ask for assistance when needed. My student can now identify and discriminate specific pictures or icons of what they need to communicate to teachers and other adults and they display great potentials in successfully accessing speech generating devices to promptly say what they need.

My Project

Using the three iPads with the application proloquo2go, my students will be able to simultaneously communicate to teachers, parents and children their age. This speech generating device will enable my students to develop a greater quality of life through communication, self-expression and independence. Speech generating devices target skills that help children with ASD and other disabilities to effectively communicate with others in a variety of situations and settings. The evidence base suggests that within the communication domain, a variety of skills can be targeted for intervention, including initiation, expressive language (verbal), joint attention/gestures (non-verbal), and pragmatics (conversation skills). The research also demonstrates that reading and math skills can be addressed using SGD. My students will be able to relate more with typically developing peers through constant communication and effective practices.

I truly believe in the power of effective communication.

And as a teacher and a proactive advocate of students with exceptional needs, these devices will only enhance their way of life through constant learning through technology integrated in their everyday lives. This will help my students with limited or no speech have a voice of their own, making sure that their thoughts are heard and understood.
