It allows both staff and students to stay comfortable and focused throughout the day, especially during warm afternoons when attention and regulation used to decline. With a stable and cool classroom, students can fully participate in lessons, sensory activities, and group projects without distraction or discomfort. When the unit was first installed, the students immediately noticed the change. Several smiled and commented on how \"nice and cool\" the room felt, and the paraprofessionals remarked on how much calmer and more engaged the class became. This improvement has supported longer periods of on-task learning and smoother transitions between activities. Our next steps include expanding small-group academic and life skills rotations now that the classroom environment can remain consistent and conducive to focused learning for all ten students.","fullyFundedDate":1728415330179,"projectUrl":"project/just-chillin/8816751/","projectTitle":"Just Chillin'","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kit","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4433018_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1657659937618","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/m-aguila"},{"teacherId":4433018,"projectId":9179368,"letterContent":"Our new refrigerator has quickly become an important part of our classroom routine. My 4th–6th grade students, most of whom are developing foundational life skills, are using it to learn about food safety, independence, and teamwork. Each day, students help store snacks and lunch items, practice opening and closing the doors gently, and check that everything is in its right place. These small routines are helping them build responsibility and confidence.\r\n\r\nWhen the refrigerator first arrived, the students were thrilled. Several gathered around to watch it being plugged in, and a few cheered when the light came on inside. For many, it was their first time connecting something they use at home to a school project. They immediately wanted to help organize it—lining up yogurt cups, fruit, and water bottles with pride and excitement.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to use the refrigerator as part of our cooking and nutrition lessons. Students will learn to follow simple recipes, store leftovers safely, and talk about which foods need to be kept cold. These experiences are helping them strengthen both practical and social skills, while also giving them a sense of belonging and accomplishment in our classroom community.","fullyFundedDate":1746649338603,"projectUrl":"project/cooler-than-a-cucumber/9179368/","projectTitle":"Cooler Than a Cucumber","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kit","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4433018_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1657659937618","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/m-aguila"},{"teacherId":605293,"projectId":9201350,"letterContent":"Thank you very much for the headphones that you donated to my class. The use of headphones is very beneficial in my classrooms where multiple students are working on different activities at the same time, as it creates a more personalized and quiet learning environment for them. My students were able to focus on their individual tasks without being disturbed by surrounding noise. With these materials, it lessens the distractions in the classroom. \r\n\r\nMy students enjoy using the headphones because they perfectly fit in their heads. We use these books to learn new vocabulary words, to talk about theme, and to learn about characters and types of literature.\r\n\r\nFor read alouds, I typically choose a book of which I only have one copy or a book that would be slightly too complicated for many of my students to read on their own. For novel studies, on the other hand, each student gets a copy of the book. For these, we read some of the chapters together as a class (with me reading and my students following along). But for most of the chapters, students read in groups of 3.\r\n\r\nI assign students so that groups are mixed. If a group includes a struggling reader, the group also includes a very strong reader. That way, the stronger readers can carry the bulk of the decoding work, and the struggling readers can still enjoy the text and learn the comprehension skills.\r\n\r\nMy students enjoy this group work, and my current class does amazingly well with managing themselves and staying on task as they do this work. When the weather is nice, we often do this reading outside with some groups reading under the play structure, some groups reading at the picnic tables, some groups reading at benches, and other groups reading in the school garden. After students have read a few chapters, they work with each other or with me to answer questions about the text in a packet and to do additional activities to learn new vocabulary words that were included in the text.\r\n\r\nCurrently, we are doing a read aloud. The book is A Wrinkle in Time and was published in 1962. Since this book is complex, I am reading it aloud to my whole class. The next book we will read is the book that you donated to us, When You Reach Me, published in 2009. I chose this combination because the main character in When You Reach Me is a girl about the same age as my students. This character's name is Miranda, and her favorite book is A Wrinkle in Time. I am very excited that your donation is allowing me to do this literature pairing, and I can't wait to see how it will turn out. We read Chapter 2 of A Wrinkle in Time today, so we should be finished with it and ready to begin When You Reach Me around January 21. I am looking forward to it.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for helping my class through your generous donation.","fullyFundedDate":1727990544469,"projectUrl":"project/individual-copies-of-a-novel/8451897/","projectTitle":"Individual Copies of a Novel","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Bean","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2418276_orig.jpg?crop=1721,1721,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720466747968","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2418276"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4224","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":343,"numTeachers":15,"percentFrplEligible":65,"percentAsian":28,"percentBlack":7,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":47,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"22.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.7,"schoolId":4224,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Shannon Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Shannon Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/west-contra-costa-unified-school-district/shannon-elementary-school/4224"}
