Have you ever had a moment where you had difficulty pronouncing a word or sound? This is a regular experience for my students with speech disorders.
I teach students with speech and language disorders in two different schools in the same school district.
I work with students who are in transitional kindergarten through 5th grade; they are between the ages of four to eleven. My students have a wide-range of needs, ranging from mild to severe. Our schools are highly diverse with students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. They are eager learners who are motivated to learn new techniques in order to improve their speech skills. My students need tools that can teach them correct placement in the mouth; speech buddies are the solution.
My Project
Speech Buddies are specialized tools designed to help people learn correct tongue positioning for five of the most difficult-to-learn sounds - R, S, L, CH and SH. With these tools children learn and feel how to correct a problem sound. Speech Buddies were designed by a team of speech-language pathologists and engineers who understand the challenges associated with speech therapy and treating speech disorders.
It is necessary to note that Speech Buddies are not oral motor exercises or therapy. These tools help increase awareness through kinesthetic and sensory biofeedback.
As my students progress through school, having a speech disorder can result in teasing and bullying, which can impact a person's self esteem.
Donations to this project will ultimately allow my students to not only improve their articulation skills, but improve their self esteem and their quality of life.
