My Students

Do you remember when you were learning how to produce speech sounds accurately? Many of my students have articulation disorders and delays which affect their correct sound productions. This unintelligibility affects their ability to effectively communicate in the school setting.

My students are identified as children with special education needs.

Most of them have articulation and/or language disorders. These identified disabilities make it difficult for them to function in the regular education classroom without services from speech/language pathologists. I teach at a public school in Wisconsin which is identified with 64% poverty. Our poverty is generational which is defined as having been in poverty for at least two generations. This is significant because getting an education is the key to getting out and staying out of poverty. A solid educational base includes being able to orally communicate information, opinions, and ideas effectively to different audiences for a variety of purposes. Children with speech sound impairments struggle with this language arts standard and require extra instruction in this area.

My Project

I am requesting a video camcorder to utilize with my students during their speech therapy sessions. My students with speech sound impairments work on sound productions. This involves utilizing various multi- modality strategies and techniques to elicit correct productions. One of the most difficult steps in teaching children to produce accurate productions is getting the students to perceive that the productions are not accurate. I believe that using a video camcorder to visually and auditorilly record their productions will make this step easier. The students can receive immediate feedback during speech therapy. I will also have the capabilities to burn Cd's of the therapy sessions that they can take home and promote generalization and maintenance of learned skills. My goal for each student is to be intelligible in the classroom and to communicate effectively in a variety of different settings.

My project positively affects students who cannot communicate as well as their peers.

I believe that my project will promote multi-modality learning and home/school connections. These strategies are key to the success of speech sound development in children. Please consider donating to my project. The positive results will be life long for my students.
