My students are identified as children with special education needs. Most of them have articulation and/or language disorders. These identified disabilities make it difficult for them to function in the regular education classroom without services from speech/language pathologists. I teach at a public school in Wisconsin which is identified with 64% poverty. Our poverty is generational which is defined as having been in poverty for at least two generations. This is significant because getting an education is the key to getting out and staying out of poverty. A solid educational base includes being able to orally communicate information, opinions, and ideas effectively to different audiences for a variety of purposes. Children with speech sound impairments struggle with this language arts standard and require extra instruction in this area.
