Help me give my students a library that reflects them. I work at a school where 99% of our students are black. I want my students to be able to see themselves in our classroom library.

My Students
This year I have a diverse learners classroom of twenty- eight 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. They are all excited to learn and love to play games. They are all uniquely different in their own ways and they are doing a really great job getting along with one another. I have a student who loves to watch the train go by the classroom. I have a student who loves to learn sign words. I have a student who always makes us laugh. I have a student who loves to be a leader. I have a student who loves to write little thank you notes with beautiful drawings. Lastly, I have a student who is far behind but is never discouraged. They all work so hard and crave learning new things. This year we are going to be working on the love of reading and rebuilding what learning was lost over the pandemic. I want to build my classroom library into a sanctuary for my students.
My Project
Help give my students literature that reflects them! For so many years there were no books that represented Black Americans. Luckily now there are so many more black children's book writers displaying black characters that represent our students. My students will be able to access these books in our classroom library during small group rotations during instructional time. My students also check books out weekly to keep at their desk and read throughout the week. I would love for them to be able to do these activities with books that represent them.
