Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think about how you remember things...if you tell a student, they will probably forget, if you show them, they may remember a little, but if you INVOLVE them in the learning process, they will comprehend and retain the skills. My students need more hands-on resources and activities and you can help!

My students are in one of the lowest performing schools in TN.

Our charter school has been asked to convert this failing public school because of the success demonstrated by our charter system in the past. One student out of 156 is not on free/reduced lunch, and over 80% were at or below basic on standardized tests last year. I am a collaborative teacher working in an inclusion classroom. I work with all of the students, but my focus is on students with Special Needs and English Language Learners. This provides unique challenges all its own. The students have shown great passion for learning and are eager to grow and become successful. They now believe that they will one day be prepared to go to a four year college if they stay committed and work hard. We have brought hope to a hopeless neighborhood and are instilling in our students that they can succeed despite all statistics. Our data has shown that they are already making great gains in academics.

My Project

We continually spiral skills throughout the year and several struggle in different areas. I would like these resources to help reinforce areas the students may be struggling in. We offer much differentiated instruction, work in centers, partner work, and hands-on learning. I would like to use the construction paper to implement foldables and origami as part of our upcoming geometry unit. The graph dry erase boards will be helpful for data, geometry, place value, algebra, and many other areas. Of course, dry erase markers die quite easily and become very expensive to replace. We already have several resources for reading and language arts, so much of my focus for this project is in mathematics.

This project is important because our students are genuinely hungry to learn.

They want to succeed and are energized by the activities and hands-on learning we provide. Many of our students have gone to school in fear and hating school in the past. They have failed at the traditional classroom strategies and are now getting to learn and comprehend important skills. They are now tasting success, and they are hungry for it. Thank you for helping us to do "Whatever It Takes" to support this.
