Help me give my students diverse picture books that align to our science units, as well as hands on materials such as a Root-Vue Farm and game, so they can become future scientists!
My classroom is filled with first graders who are excited to be at school every day and learn more about the world! My students are most engaged by beautifully illustrated, engaging books and hands on experiences. My students come to school ready to experience hands on learning and spread kindness. They come from all over the world, speak many languages, and are excited to share what they know with their classmates. I strive to provide exciting, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning opportunities for my diverse group of students.
My Project
In my first grade classroom, my students love science! They love reading books about what we are studying and also having play based and hands on experiments to learn more. Our science units throughout the year are Monarch Butterflies and their Migration, Rocks, Balance and Motion, and Plants. All of our units are hands on and the kids are able to directly experiment and observe in order to learn.
This project contains books featuring diverse characters and authors that directly correspond with our science units as well as hands on experiences for my students.
I want my students to be able to read books where they see themselves represented in science. Having access to diverse literature will help students learn about pioneering men and women in science and will help my students visualize themselves as scientists.
I have also included in this project some hands on materials for science experiments and play. This way, my students can take what they've read in the books and reenact it with themselves in the starring role.
