Special Toys for Special Students

My students need 11 fine motor toys, including Alphabet Sounds Picture Puzzles and dressing frames.

Did you ever get frustrated when you were doing a puzzle because it was just too hard? In my special education bilingual class in a public school, my students constantly complain that the fine motor toys I have are “too hard!” I am a first year teacher who entered the classroom in the beginning of the year 2007-2008. My shelves were completely bare, closets empty. The previous teacher took all of her fine motor toys with her. The other special education teachers in my school each gave me a few puzzles and fine motor toys to use this year, but I got their leftovers. My toys don’t even fill up the small shelf that I have. They are missing pieces and are too difficult for my students with developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome, PDD and ADHD, other types of Mental Retardation, all ages 6-9. My students love doing puzzles, but cannot complete the ones I have in my room. With your support, I will be able to restock my shelves with appropriate level fine motor toys and puzzles. I will be able to provide them with the proper level of support that they need. Using these materials will make a difference in my students’ ability to be more successful in school and in our community.
