Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Cummings' Champions are a multi-grade 12:1:1 class. That means they are students with special needs. Many of my students are very close to their mainstream peers academically, but they struggle with impulse control, self-managing emotions, and other various social and emotional norms that others do not struggle with.
They are STUDENTS with special needs, emphasis on the STUDENT first!
I love my students because every day is a day of growth... for me! When they grow, I beam with joy; when they hurt so do I. These students help me wake up every day with a smile on my face and they remind me why I wanted to become a special education teacher!
My Project
The students in my class will benefit from the educational, sensory, and kinesthetic materials in this project. Many of the materials (such as the seat cushion, chair fidget bands, and headphones) will allow the students to operate throughout the day without missing educational time due to stimming, breakdowns, or any other such activities.
With these materials, the students will be able to grow educationally, but more importantly socially and emotionally.
These resources will allow students to learn that it is okay to be who they are and they should have no shame or embarrassment in their stimming, heightened sensitivity to light and sound, or anything else that may make them feel "different." With your help, these students and all of my students to follow will have the same opportunities to learn as their mainstream peers, all while never changing what/who they truly are... which is perfect!
Noise Reduction Headphones, wiggle chairs, boundary chairs, and chair fidget feet will allow students to stim appropriately in class while still maintaining focus on the academics. Emotion Balls, Social Skills board games, and other social and emotional supports will let the students understand that it is OK to feel differently and have emotions. They will learn how to handle their emotions and tough social situations. The Gears will help the students with their fine motor skills. The books are a very important part of this project. They will be used as curriculum builders to help the students academically, but they will be also used to help students learn about the students in their class and themselves allowing them to understand what makes them truly special individuals!
